Contemporary Artwork

Creating Artwork for me is a celebration of nature, its wild spaces, incredible landscapes and natural fauna and flora. My work is inspired by the more abstract process of pattern-making, the juxtaposition of shape, colour and texture. I have produced a body of work inspired by my personal experience of the local landscape, seascapes and my fascination with nature's changing seasons.

Some paintings are available as original acrylics on canvas and other as limited edition Gicleé prints.

My Story

Laura is an accomplished artist based in Canterbury, she studied Interior Design at the London College of Furniture and later went on to study Fine Art at the Kent Institute of Art and Design (KIAD).

Laura describes her semi-abstract style as her way of capturing the 'feel' of a landscape or item rather than a realistic or photographic representation. When painting at home she listens to music and uses the rhythm to ease the gentle movement of the paint and to become completely immersed in her work.

In 2016 Laura, and her husband Chris, built a Shepherd Hut studio.  This enabled her to have work space and storage for her art.  It is in this studio that she is able to create much of her smaller and medium sized pieces of artwork, but she has also produced commission work as large as 183cm x 122cm (6' x 4')!

You can view some of these larger works in the sold work section of this website.

Working from life sketches and photographs, Laura creates unique landscapes that are bursting with colour and texture.  Laura works mainly using a 'wet-on-wet' technique, moving paint using pallet knives and flat brushes, dropping, splashing, flicking and placing colour.  This technique involves a great deal of planning, mixing of quantities of paints and the positioning and layering of colours.  Once the work has dried she applies washes to increase the depth of colour, highlight pattern and enhance the finish.

Her unique technique produces work that is loose in its expression, creating a semi-abstraction that encourages the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the work.

In addition to her current work, she has also applied mixed media techniques using acrylics and textiles, which sold well as originals, prints and cards.

In her free time she likes to sew, making clothing & soft furnishings.  She also runs a needlework group, teaching sewing skills, dress making and machining techniques.
